📝 From the Editor: A Trauma-Informed Perspective on Burnout
Dr. Veronica Y. Griffin, Ph.D., MSW, LCSW, LICSW, LCSW-C, CPPT | CEO, Protect Each One Consulting, LLC From Burnout to Balance: A Trauma-Informed Path to Reset, Restore, and Rise Understanding Burnout Through a Trauma-Informed Lens Burnout can present as emotional exhaustion, detachment, decreased motivation, or even physical symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, and sleep disruption. For many — especially those in helping professions — it is also closely linked to secondary trauma, where repeated exposure to others' distress begins to impact one's own well-being. The body keeps score of stress Chronic activation of the stress response is not sustainable Safety, regulation, and restoration are essential — not optional Burnout is not a personal failure. It is often a physiological and psychological response to prolonged stress without adequate recovery. The Role of Stress and Cortisol When we experience stress, the body releases cortisol — our primary stress hormone. In short bursts, cortisol helps us stay alert and responsive. However, when stress becomes chronic, cortisol levels can remain elevated, leading to: Increased anxiety and irritability Disrupted sleep patterns Difficulty concentrating Weakened immune function Weight and metabolic changes From a trauma-informed perspective, this is not just 'stress' — it is a nervous system that has been in survival mode for too long. Moving Beyond Surface-Level Self-Care Self-care has often been reduced to temporary relief strategies. While those moments matter, sustainable well-being requires intentional, consistent practices that regulate the nervous system and restore balance. Setting and maintaining boundaries without guilt Prioritizing rest as a necessity, not a reward Engaging in activities that promote emotional regulation Creating space for reflection and meaning-making Even small shifts — what we call micro-resets — can create powerful change. A few minutes of deep breathing, stepping away from a stressful task, or pausing to check in with yourself can interrupt the stress cycle. Fueling the Body to Support the Mind What we eat directly impacts how we feel. Research continues to show the strong connection between nutrition, mood, and stress regulation. To support recovery from burnout: Incorporate foods rich in magnesium and omega-3 fatty acids Maintain stable blood sugar through balanced meals Stay hydrated to support energy and focus These are not about perfection — they are about creating a foundation for resilience. The MindShift: Reframing Stress and Reclaiming Control At the heart of recovery is a shift in perspective. Through a MindShift approach, we move from automatic, survival-based thinking to intentional, empowered decision-making. Recognizing unhelpful thought patterns Reframing challenges with clarity and compassion Reconnecting with purpose and values Instead of asking, 'Why am I so overwhelmed?' we begin to ask, 'What is my body telling me, and what do I need right now?' From Awareness to Action Understanding burnout is important — but transformation happens when knowledge is applied. Whether in clinical settings, workplaces, or everyday life, a trauma-informed approach emphasizes: Safety – Creating environments that reduce harm and promote stability Awareness – Recognizing the signs of stress and burnout early Action – Implementing practical strategies that support healing and resilience 🪑 Spotlight: The Listening Table — Sometimes burnout is compounded by unresolved conflict — at work, at home, or within ourselves. Restoring is not optional. Rising is possible. When we align research with real-world strategies, we empower individuals and organizations to move from exhaustion to resilience — and from surviving to truly thriving.
