A protective order, also called a restraining order or order of protection, is a court-issued document designed to protect a person from abuse, harassment, stalking, or threats. Filing is generally free and an attorney is not required to apply.
If you are in immediate danger, call 911 first. Contact a domestic violence hotline for safety planning before, during, and after the process.
Visit the appropriate General District, Juvenile & Domestic Relations, Circuit, District, or county court depending on your state.
Describe the abuse, threats, harassment, dates, witnesses, and incident details as specifically as possible. Clerks can provide forms.
A judge or magistrate may review your petition the same day and issue an emergency or temporary protective order when granted.
A full hearing is usually scheduled within 10–21 days depending on state rules. A final protective order may last one to two years or longer.
Keep a copy with you. Report violations to law enforcement immediately by calling 911 and register the order locally when possible.
Military Protective Orders: Military members may also obtain a Military Protective Order from their commanding officer in addition to a civilian protective order. MPOs are enforceable on military installations. Contact the installation Family Advocacy Program or SARC for assistance.
Lethal means safety counseling, also called CALM or Counseling on Access to Lethal Means, focuses on increasing time and distance between a person in crisis and highly lethal methods. It is about creating time and space for a person to get help, using compassion, respect, and collaboration.
Suicidal crises can be short-lived. Increasing time and distance from highly lethal methods can reduce risk and give a person time to receive support.
Store firearms unloaded in a locked safe or case, keep ammunition locked separately, use cable or trigger locks, and consider temporary transfer during a crisis.
Keep small quantities on hand, lock prescriptions and high-risk medications, use medication lock boxes, and dispose of unused medication at take-back locations.
Secure firearms, ammunition, medications, household chemicals, sharp objects, windows/heights where relevant, and create a safety plan with the person at risk.
Ask directly and respectfully about access to firearms or medications. Keep the tone non-judgmental, collaborative, and focused on safety rather than punishment.
Use 988, Stanley Brown Safety Planning resources, VA Safety Planning App, Zero Suicide, AFSP, QPR, and CALM training for scripts and guidance.
If someone is in immediate danger of suicide: call 911 or 988 immediately. Do not leave the person alone. Remove access to lethal means if it is safe to do so, and stay with them until help arrives.

Lethal means safety counseling (also called CALM Counseling on Access to Lethal Means) is an evidence-based approach to reducing suicide risk by increasing time and distance between a person in crisis and the most lethal methods. Most suicides occur in the home. Restricting access to lethal means even temporarily saves lives.
Research shows that suicidal crises are often short-lived. If a person cannot access their intended method, they are unlikely to substitute another. Reducing access to firearms and medications during a crisis significantly reduces suicide risk and death.
Firearms are the most lethal and most common method of suicide death. Medications (prescription and over-the-counter) are the most common method of suicide attempts. Other methods include household chemicals, sharp objects, and heights.
Mental health providers, primary care physicians, crisis counselors, family members, and anyone supporting a person at risk. No clinical background is required to have this conversation.
Free training available at calmamerica.org for providers and community members. Teaches how to collaboratively discuss safe storage with at-risk individuals while respecting their rights and autonomy.
Store firearms UNLOADED in a locked gun safe or case. Store ammunition SEPARATELY and locked. Use cable locks or trigger locks on all firearms. Consider temporarily transferring firearms to a trusted person, gun shop, or law enforcement during a crisis. VA has partnered with the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) on safe storage: nssf.org/safety.
Keep only small quantities of medications on hand. Lock up all prescription medications, especially opioids, benzodiazepines, and antidepressants. Use a medication lock box (available at pharmacies). Ask a pharmacist about safety packaging. Dispose of unused medications at a DEA take-back location: dea.gov/takebackday.
Secure or remove firearms and ammunition. Lock up all medications. Secure household chemicals (bleach, pesticides, cleaning agents). Remove or secure sharp objects if risk is high. Install window guards if living above ground floor. Create a safety plan with the person at risk.
Ask directly: 'Do you have access to firearms or medications at home?' Be non-judgmental and collaborative. Frame it as a safety measure, not a punishment. Involve trusted family members when possible. Document the safety plan. Follow up. CALM training at calmamerica.org provides scripts and guidance.
